Background of the Study

Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases are on the rise globally, including in Nigeria. These conditions, though primarily physical, also have profound psychological impacts on affected individuals. Patients with chronic illnesses often experience anxiety, depression, and stress, which can adversely affect their overall well-being, treatment adherence, and quality of life (Akpan & Adeyemo, 2023). Nurses, as key players in patient care, are not only responsible for managing the physical aspects of chronic diseases but are also expected to recognize and address the psychological impact of these conditions.

In Taraba State, a region where access to healthcare is often limited, the burden of chronic illnesses is significant. Nurses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital (TSSH) play an essential role in the management of these conditions, but their ability to recognize and address the psychological effects of chronic illnesses remains understudied. Research suggests that when nurses are adequately trained to identify and manage the psychological aspects of chronic illnesses, they can significantly enhance the patients' coping mechanisms and adherence to treatment (Durojaiye et al., 2024). However, there is limited evidence on the extent of nurses' awareness and preparedness to address these psychological issues in the context of chronic illnesses at TSSH.

This study seeks to evaluate nurses' awareness of the psychological impact of chronic illnesses and how this awareness influences patient care at TSSH. By identifying gaps in nurses’ knowledge and understanding, the research will provide insights into how care for chronic illness patients can be improved by integrating psychological support into nursing practice.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic illnesses affect millions of Nigerians, and many of these patients experience significant psychological distress, which can affect their quality of life and health outcomes. Nurses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital are at the forefront of managing these patients, but there is limited research into how well nurses recognize and address the psychological implications of chronic diseases. The lack of awareness may lead to inadequate psychological support for patients, potentially leading to poor treatment adherence, increased hospital admissions, and worsened outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which nurses at TSSH are aware of the psychological effects of chronic illnesses and how they incorporate this awareness into patient care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of nurses' awareness of the psychological impact of chronic illnesses on patients at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To assess how nurses incorporate psychological support into the care of patients with chronic illnesses.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in addressing the psychological needs of chronic illness patients and recommend strategies for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' awareness regarding the psychological impact of chronic illnesses on patients at TSSH?
  2. How do nurses at TSSH incorporate psychological care into the management of chronic illness patients?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in addressing the psychological needs of chronic illness patients, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher awareness of the psychological impact of chronic illnesses will be more likely to provide psychological support to patients.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness of the psychological impact of chronic illnesses and patient satisfaction with care.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate training and resources will significantly hinder nurses' ability to address the psychological impact of chronic illnesses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in various departments that manage chronic illnesses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital, including general medicine and specialty units. Limitations include possible response biases in surveys, lack of detailed psychological training for nurses, and variations in individual nurse-patient interactions.
